Proposed highway: "It boggles the mind."
The new year begins with a Toronto Star story about a proposed GTA highway
described as "rewarding sprawl." The highway would connect Vaughan to
Milton by slicing through protected Greenbelt lands, paving over about
2,000 acres of prime farmland in Caledon and threatening sensitive wetlands
areas. It's a controversial plan as you'll read here Toronto Star story.

Townhall Meeting: January 28th!
A special town hall meeting will be held at the end of the month to discuss
the future of the Greenbelt and plans for a controversial airport on the
Pickering Lands, a 13,000-acre swath of Class 1 farmland. Our Partners, the
David Suzuki Foundation and Land Over Landings, will be participating.  Ontario

The timing could not be better! The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) will spend the next year focusing on the world's soils. We treat this
vital resource like dirt, but it feeds us, filters our water, stores carbon
and is home to one-quarter of the world's biodiversity. The rare soils of
Ontario deserve special protection for all of the above reasons. The UN's
International Year of Soils will add further momentum to our movement!
