The city of Karlsruhe Germany is globally known for its leadership in public transportation, particularly Light Rail Transit (LRT).  Located in the Baden Wurttemberg region along the French border, the City of Karlsruhe's population is about 300,000 - about the same as Kitchener and Waterloo.  Where the Region of Waterloo is building the 19km first phase of its LRT project, Karlsruhe operates more than 260km of LRT with 190 stations!
In this presentation, the director of Karlsruhe's transit agency will describe the city's transit system.  Special attention will be paid to the so-called Karlsruhe model - using specially designed trains to operate in both the city centre and at much higher speeds between cities. This technology has been adopted in many cities throughout Europe and around the world.  The city is also currently building a 2.4 km tunnel to improve performance for transit, and all modes in the core of the City.  Best practices from Karlsruhe may serve as important lessons for the Region of Waterloo.

Holger Wagensommer is a Planning/Infrastructure Engineer for Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe and is responsible for the design, planning and project management of railway infrastructure in urban and suburban areas. He has many years of experience in railway infrastructure, designing light rail stops, barrier free stops and stations and designing stations in urban and suburban public transport systems.
