Subject: New Democrats: Showing leadership on the environment
Thank you for getting in touch. Please know that I share your concern for our environment.
As a former Environment Minister in Quebec, I have consistently fought to protect the environment. We introduced North America's most comprehensive Sustainable Development Act and amended the Quebec Charter of Rights to include the right to live in a clean and healthy environment. Today, I am proud to lead a party that is fully committed to these same priorities.
Others agree that we are on the right track. Following my meeting with Nicolas Hulot, an envoy on climate change from France, it was reported, "The French president's special envoy on climate change says he has found an ally in NDP Leader Tom Mulcair in his quest to tackle rising greenhouse gas emissions across the globe." - Mike Blanchfield, CTV News, October 7, 2014.
Earlier this month, I had the pleasure to open The National Forum on Clean Energy and Industry. In my speech, I outlined my vision of how Canada can take a leadership role in working with the world and stop working against the planet.
Here are some initiatives a New Democratic government will undertake:
- enshrine the right to clean air and clean water in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- ensure polluters pay for the pollution they create
- redirect the billions paid in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry to the clean energy sector
- invest in wind, solar, and geothermal technologies; creating thousands of new jobs for Canadians
- target the investment of revenue from cap-and-trade into renewable energy and clean technology projects and in the regions where the revenue is generated
- assist homeowners and businesses with improving the energy efficiency of their homes and offices
Further, our NDP team is working hard on legislation that will:
- establish a national public transit strategy
- remove sales tax on the purchase of eligible energy-efficient products and create a tax credit for the purchase of these products
- ban tanker traffic on the ecologically, fragile BC coast
- prohibit the use of lakes as waste dumping sites
- improve the Species at Risk and the Navigable Waters Protection Acts
- place a moratorium on the use of chemical pesticides that have not been proven safe
- create a new recycling program for electronic products containing substance(s) found on the List of Toxic Substances in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act
Regrettably, the governing Conservatives continue to ignore these practical proposals.
For our part, we will continue to push hard for the policies that will help to achieve a fairer, greener, and more prosperous country. I invite you to follow the work of NDP Environment critic Megan Leslie who is taking the lead in the fight against climate change - http://meganleslie.ndp.ca/environment
Again, I appreciate hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Tom Mulcair, M.P. (Outremont)
Leader of the Official Opposition
New Democratic Party of Canada
