Dear Robert,
A few years ago I attended the annual Mayor's Dinner, a big civic event that is a fundraiser for the Working Centre. It annually selects a noteworthy resident of the Region to thank the person for their lifetime work and service on behalf of the community. About 800 people attended the dinner, drawn from all sectors of the community, young and old, rich and poor, many with their own fine records of contributing to the community. What drew them together was both their common interests in making the Region a better place and their wish to recognize the outstanding service and accomplishments of the honouree. When the recipient came to the stage and spoke there was a standing ovation - a heartfelt and moving gesture. There was a silent auction as part of the fundraiser and the recipient, a modest and inherently sociable individual, offered his own contribution: a home-cooked meal and evening of socializing at his own home. I believe it was bid up to about $600. His name is John Jackson.
Robert, I'm ashamed of you. What you have said is very hurtful.
- Greg Michalenko

Hi All,
When the older generation (e.g.GREN) does not take sufficiently innovative environmental initiatives, a justifiably impatient and pisssed-off younger generation (e.g. WREN) will leap frog over them with high energy and enthusiasm. After all, they — not us — will have to live (or die) in the ENVIRONMENTAL HELL (sorry John) that our older generation created.
(O.K., maybe it was more the mostly invisible ruling oligarchy who pulled the strings while most other humans were too ignorant to act (thank you media & education systems), a relatively few felt powerless (no imagination & scare easily), and the too numerous traitors to humanity retreated to denial (e.g. the Harper gang & its radical US Republican “friends”).
Environment problems require the new creative thinking espoused by many of the younger generation — and a few of the older generation.
Yes, I am — and registered last week.

New to WREN? In December 2012, the Waterloo Region Environmental Network (WREN) supported the first event of its kind in the region to bring together over 70 individuals from 60+ organizations to network, define a collective vision, and determine opportunities for collaboration within the local sustainability cluster.
Let’s keep the conversation going! We are delighted to continually provide updates on the outcomes from this momentum, and ask for your continued involvement in networking with the local environmental community.
ASCEnt (Accelerating Social Cause Entrepreneurs) is an innovative pilot program – located in Waterloo Region — offering social entrepreneurs and benefit enterprises a comprehensive program to move companies from idea to sustainable success.
Through a program of education and business mentorship focussed on earning revenue and balanced impact, our goal is to help social enterprises polish their go to market plans, build viable product offerings and make critical connections to partners, customers and industry influencers.
With a focus on building and strengthening existing support systems and infrastructures for social enterprises, this initiative embodies the collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit necessary to create companies and jobs for public, social or environmental benefit throughout Ontario.
