Good Day,
This coming Thursday, June 19th we are lucky to have award-winning Canadian author Taras Grescoe in Waterloo to talk about his most recent book - StrapHanger - Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile that could appeal to most GREN members. Taras has explored cities around the world and will talk about the coming transportation revolution - in particular community building, transit, and urban design.
The first speaker in the ION Community and Transit Talk Series, Taras Grescoe is a highly-respected thought-leader on sustainable transportation. His talk will explore urban transportation, city living, and the world's great transit systems with thoughts and ideas for our community as the launch of our ION Light Rail Transit and Bus Rapid Transit approaches.
Details are as follows:
Date: Thursday, June 19, 2014, 7:00pm
Location: Knox Presbyterian Church, 50 Erb Street W., Waterloo
Cost: Free!
We hope that you will be able to attend this fun, informative talk geared to everyone in our community. It will be a great way to learn more about the upcoming ION Rapid Transit project across Waterloo Region and hear firsthand how everyone can become involved in building the best possible future for our community.
Taras' links to Waterloo extend back to 2001 when his first book Sacre Blues won the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-fiction beating out dozens of other books from across Canada with his attempts to understand the rituals, eccentricities, and customs of the province of Quebec. His subsequent books Bottom Feeder: How the Fish on Our Plates is Killing Our Planet (2008), The Devil's Picnic: A Tour of Everything the Governments of the World Don't Want You to Try (2006), and The End of Elsewhere: Travels Among The Tourists (2004) along with writing for publications such as the Times of London , The Chicago Tribune Magazine, Wired, National Geographic, Saturday Night, and the New York Times have lead him on repeated global journeys and provided the insights and experiences for Straphanger as Taras explored the features that differentiated the greatest cities in the world from the others.
You can learn more about Thursday's event through the information card below or the press release:

Wordsworth will have his books available at the event and there will be a question and answer session after his talk.
I hope you can make it and feel free to bring a friend or anyone you think might be interested in learning about transportation, culture, and community building.
Cheers,
Kevin.
