Lori you are SO VERY RIGHT. There needs to be MORE info more OFTEN to
continually educate the newbies to Waterloo Region and new home owners
and apartment dwellings. I clipped an article from the KIT Post
recently Which should also be in the RECORD to teach people about the
now recyclable soft plastic bags. It only took me 2-3 weeks to fill
one of the large bags and to put it in recycle. We need to be more
carefully taught. Ginny

Thanks John- I saw the first show last week- the tour of the REEP house- it
was very informative and helpful - thanks Susan!

What bothers me is the people at the Region in charge of our waste stream,
who do not do/give much community education on how to do things- ie. what to
put or not put in the Bluebox, green bin, yard waste, garbage etc.. They
focus their education efforts on kids in public schools I think, but there
are a lot of adults out there who really don't know how to do things -you'll
notice this sometimes if you have new neighbours, or in our case, young
parents with kids who somehow never got the education on how to put out
things, so lots of their stuff is not put out following the rules/guidelines
and therefore is left at the curb each week- eg. how to bundle cardboard so
they'll take it. And people move so much these days from other cities and
countries, that there needs to be regular presentations on how to do all
this. I think they should hold information sessions once every month or
couple of months at the libraries or something, otherwise people just throw
it all in garbage bags to be done with it, so a lot of stuff gets landfilled
that should be recycled or composted. I know it all used to be in the front
of the phonebook, but those are going by the wayside now. Hopefully people
can look online easily. Sorry- had to vent about this!
