Hi folks

Ontario Power Generation wants to extend the use of Pickering Nuclear beyond it's design capacity (Facility is at end of life) and there is a lack of reasonable data to show continued use can be done safely. Comments to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission are needed by THIS TUESDAY.

I submitted a 52 page power point calling for the closure of this.  It's on google docs here: https://drive.google.com/#folders/0BzVCtZYIs-RgUjFoOXZsQ242eHc

There is also a quick to use template letter noted below that folks can use to help call for the closure of this plant as well. Takes only a couple of minutes to do. Well worth the effort to prevent nuclear disasters.

Details below for your reference.

Have a good one.

Subject: Fwd: Help us SHUT DOWN PICKERING - make your submission by Tuesday April 22

Good afternoon:

My name is Mike O'Morrow and I am the Nuclear Campaign Assistant at Greenpeace Canada.

I am contacting you because, in the past, you've shown the courage to call for the shut-down of nuclear plants in Ontario.

We are asking you to send a written submission to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Ontario's energy minister by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, April 22 calling for the closure of the Pickering nuclear station.

Last year, hundreds of people like you told the CNSC they shouldn't allow Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to run Pickering beyond its design life. Thanks to public pressure and NGOs like the Canadian Environmental Law Association and Greenpeace highlighting gaps in OPG's case, the CNSC told OPG to return this year with a full safety case.

This was an important victory for our campaign, and I thank you for your help on that.

However, the safety case OPG submitted to the CNSC has not been made public, nor has it been reviewed by an independent third party. Both OPG and the CNSC lacks transparency, and it's important we work to expose them again this year.

Here's how you can help: please send a a letter to the CNSC by April 22 and tell them to deny OPG's request to run Pickering beyond its design life.

Once completed, submissions can be emailed to interventions at cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca.

Here are two resources for you to use towards completing your submission:

> A letter template (please revise the letter into your own words and add your own analysis and/or concerns)

> A Q&A backgrounder with important information about why Pickering is dangerous and unnecessary, as well as useful resources for you to use.

Finally, because we feel that the CNSC and OPG are being disingenuous, we're asking that you email your letter to Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli and ask him to step in and close Pickering.

Before I let you go, there are two other projects I'd like to tell you about.

First, the Ontario government has committed to reviewing the province's nuclear emergency plans. We expect a public consultation to occur in the late summer or early fall.

We need to raise awareness with citizens, municipal politicians, and civil society groups on why Ontarians - and specifically residents of the GTA - aren't protected in the event of an accident.

Specifically, we need city councillors in the GTA to demand better emergency plans and possibly pass resolutions at council.

We're looking for our supporters to meet with their local councillor on this issue. Our politicians need to feel public pressure for better emergency planning.

Second, at a public hearing in November, OPG will ask the CNSC for final approval to refurbish the reactors at Darlington, and for a 14-year licence to operate the station. This licence request is unprecedented in Canada. We need more - not less - scrutiny of Darlington.

The deadline for making written submissions will be in early October.

If you are interested in participating in either of the above opportunities (meeting with your city councillor or participating in the Darlington refurbishment and licencing hearings), click HERE and fill out the form. We will contact you in the future with more information.

Thanks for your support. --
