[All] There's more to airport expansion than meets the ear

Hi GREN members,At the GREN meeting on Thursday Gord spoke about some of the problems about expanding the airport in its present location, and at this time. There is a meeting this Tuesday, April 15, from 4-8 at the Waterloo Region Museum on Huron Rd. Since we all are subsidizing the airport through our taxes, it is important for us to consider whether expansion would be good, or bad, for the majority of people in the Region.
Gord has attended 2 noise committee meetings and met with people from several other neighbourhoods.
There are more concerns than just the noise and the flight paths. The timeing of the announcement below, shortly before next Tuesday's meeting about the airport expansion proposals, might just be to calm everyone's fears. But early-morning noise is only one of the concerns.
Any decision to expand the airport, when Bearskin Air has recently moved out and a short time before American Airlinse contract expires ( a contract we tax-payers have been subsidizing) may not be smart.
The location of the current airport, on swampy land may not be the best place for a new or extended runway.
The impact of air pollution from planes on our already bad air quality was NOT considered in the environmental studys.
There's more to it. Hope you'll come to the meeting on Tuesday, 4-8pm at the Museum on Huron Rd.

Dear Airport Neighbour,
On behalf of the Region of Waterloo International Airport and the Airport’s Aeronautical Noise Management Committee (ANMC), I want to provide you with an update on the status
of the Nolinor Airlines flight that departs from the airport during the early morning hours 3 days a week.
In response to your comments and concerns, and in consultation with Nolinor Airlines, we are pleased to inform you that the 6:00 a.m. morning flight time has been adjusted
to now depart from the Airport at 7:00 a.m. This change will come into effect in the next 30 to 45 days.
The Region of Waterloo International Airport is committed to meeting the needs of the aviation industry and community by maintaining safe and efficient airport operations.
The Region of Waterloo endeavors to balance the economic aspects of operating the airport with the concerns of neighbouring residents about aircraft noise. In consultation with airport staff and the Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, Nolinor has agreed
to adjust the timing of its charter flights to Baffin Island.
“We wish to thank Nolinor for working closely with the Airport and our Committee to respond to the concerns expressed by our community. The ANMC has seen an increase in noise concerns since
Nolinor began operating in September 2013. We believe this schedule change to a later morning departure is a positive indication of Nolinor’s continued commitment to support the community and we appreciate their willingness to work with us to find a mutually
agreeable solution.”
Geoff Lorentz – Councillor, Region of Waterloo &
Aeronautical Noise Management Committee (ANMC) Member
Through the Aeronautical Noise Management Committee (ANMC), formed at the Region of Waterloo International Airport in June 1999, we continue to work towards establishing an
amiable relationship with the residential and business areas adjacent to the airport.
As a neighbour of the Region of Waterloo International Airport, I would like to thank you for your comments to date. I encourage you to continue to provide your feedback and
invite you to join us for the Airport’s Master Plan Public Information Session on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Waterloo Region Museum (10 Huron Rd., Kitchener). The Airport’s Master Plan will provide a set of recommendations on future
development for the Region of Waterloo International Airport for the next 20 years and the Public Information Session will provide you with an opportunity to review details on the four development options currently under discussion. Information is also available
online at: www.waterlooairport.ca/masterplan.
Thank you for your continued interest in the Region of Waterloo International Airport.
Chris Wood
Airport General Manager
