Jane's Walk is an annual celebration of people and cities held annually on the first weekend of May. Through the simple act of walking together and discussing what makes a neighbourhood, Jane's walk helps knit people into strong and resourceful communities. Created in 2007 by friends of the urban thinker, Jane Jacobs, the annual series of free, volunteer led walks has grown from 27 to over 600 walks. Visit www.janeswalk.net to get involved, lead a walk and see what's happening in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

We are inviting you to lead a walk in the area you live, work or play. It simply involves planning a route, thinking through the stories, places and people you want to talk about and promoting it around the neighbourhood. You can also share the guiding duties with a few resourceful friends or colleagues. All walks are given and taken for free, and they are meant to be fun and participatory-everyone has a story to tell!

If you are interested in volunteering for Jane's Walk during the Festival weekend - May 4th & 5th - please contact the Organizer in your City, listed below:

Jane's Walks are as diverse and unique as any community. Since a Jane's Walk is meant to be a 'walking conversation' about neighbourhoods and how people use cities, the choice of 'conversation' and the places you choose to visit are really up to you! Of course, you are limited only by your imagination, not by what's been done before, but to get you started, here are some potential Jane's Walk themes:

  a.. Urban agriculture
  b.. History - Past & Present
  c.. Architecture
  d.. Public Space
  e.. Naturalists in the City
  f.. Walking trail discovery
  g.. Brownfields
  h.. Accessibility and Walkability
i.. Being a Youth in Your Neighbourhood
  j.. Neighbourhood Exploration
  k.. Redevelopment & Reurbanization
  l.. LGBTQ community
  m.. Renaturalization
  n.. Industrial past
  o.. Downtown life
p.. Genre Music Scenes & Venues
  q.. Nature in the City
  r.. Public Art
  s.. Food system issues
