Workshop will help Whitemans Creek farmers
to manage water needs during drought
Many farmers are relieved that this year has been wetter than the drought year of 2012.
But that means it’s the perfect time for farmers to think about how they’ll manage the next drought and ensure there’s enough water available to meet their needs.
Water supply issues can be particularly severe in the Whiteman’s Creek area of Brant and Oxford counties where many farmers rely on irrigation for a wide variety of crops grown in the sandy soils of the Norfolk Sand Plain.
To help farmers in this area, a workshop will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29 at which they can learn about efficient and effective ways to manage water so they’ll be better prepared for drought.
The event will take place at Streef Produce Farm, 200 Brant Concession 7, near  Middletown Line. It will start at 6 p.m. with demonstrations taking place until 7 p.m. followed by dinner.
The workshop is free, but those interesting in attending should contact Hajnal Kovacs at 519-621-2763 Ext. 2324 or hkovacs at grandriver.ca .
The workshop will provide information on:
·         identifying and creating alternative water sources
·         handling applications for Permits to Take Water for these alternative sources
·         water conservation methods
·         how to measure and validate irrigation efficiency.
The workshop is sponsored by a coalition of organizations that are supporting an eight-month program to help irrigators in the area drained by Whitemans Creek and its tributaries Horner and Kenny creeks.
The Water Resource Adaptation and Management Initiative received funding from Farm and Food Care Ontario. Other partners are the Brant County Federation of Agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of the Environment and the Grand River Conservation Authority.
