Well, here's the reply from Lystek's PR department, about my inquiry on
contaminants in biosolids used on farmers' fields.

Dear Eleanor,****
** **
Thank you for your inquiry. My name is Kevin Litwiller and, as the public
liaison officer for Lystek your questions have been passed on for follow
up. Mr. Mosher is actually now out of the country on vacation for a period
of time anyway and we would not want you to have to wait for an extended
period of time to discuss your concerns. The great news is that this is, of
course, not the first time this type of question has been asked and some of
the leading subject matter experts are found right here in our own
backyard. More about that when we connect.****
** **
Before we connect, I do need to clarify a few points with you right away
though:****
** **
**a) ** First and foremost, Lystek is an award-winning company whose
patented and proven technology does *not* turn municipal biosolids and/or
other, non-hazardous organic materials into “liquid sludge”. Rather, our
founders, who are world-renowned microbiologists and environmental
engineers, have developed, tested and implemented scientifically advanced
technology that converts these valuable resources into a CFIA (Canadian
Food Inspection Agency) registered, liquid fertilizer product called
LysteGro. ****
**b) **Secondly, our process and end product have undergone rigorous
analysis and testing since the day our company was founded over a dozen
years ago and we have been scrutinized by all levels of government from
Municipal, to Provincial to Federal. The net result of all this oversight
is that we have been recognized by all regulatory agencies, such as the
GRCA (Grand River Conservation Authority), MOE (Ministry of the
Environment, OMAFRA (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs) and other well-known and respected organizations such as the WEAO
(Water Environment Association) as being the most advanced solution
available today for the safe & sustainable treatment and conversion of
biosolids and similar (non-hazardous) materials into agricultural
fertilizer. ****
**c) **We are the recipients of multiple awards, such as in 2005,
from the National Research Council on Sustainability and twice from the
Water Environment Association of Ontario, most recently in April of this
year (see attached). I’m not sure if you are familiar with this association
and their work. If not, here is a link to their web site where you will
find a very good documentary regarding land application of (standard, not
“Lystecized”) biosolids: http://www.weao.org/biosolids-video. As you watch
this video, please pay special attention to the information provided by the
MOE and, in particular, Dr. Beverly Hale of the University of Guelph. This
is very important because she has spent a good portion of her professional
life looking at the very question you ask, and you must see her answer…not
Lystek’s, hers.****
** **
Once you have reviewed the above information and the video, I would
encourage you to give me a call for a more personal discussion. My contact
information is below. Or, if you would prefer me to call you, I would be
happy to do so. ****
** **
Kindest regards, ****

Subject: Your biosolids proposal for Cambridge****
** **
Hello Mr Mosher - ****
I spoke to you briefly last week after your presentation to Waterloo
Region's Planning and Works committee, on Lystek's proposal to turn
biosolids into liquid sludge at the plant to be built in Cambridge.****
It concerned me that the Councillors didn't question you about
PHARMACEUTICALS in the wastewater: all the medications that have passed
through the human body and end up in our waterways.****
If these substances remain in the liquid sludge that you propose to market
to farmers for use on their fields, what is the effect on crops? Does
anybody even know?****
Can they be filtered out - and if so how are they then disposed of?****
Thanks for any info you can provide.****
