I am so happy this morning! This story was featured in today's KW Record. Here's a quick summery.
The Ontario government will apply to become a party to the region’s court case and support the region’s attempt to reverse a decision by Ontario Municipal Board that opened up 1,056 hectares to new development. The region wanted to keep that down to 85 hectares.
It is rare for the municipal government to ask the courts to overturn a decision from the Ontario Municipal Board — a provincial tribunal that rules on land-use and development disputes. It is even rarer for the provincial government to side with a municipal counterpart against a decision from that provincial tribunal.
“The fact that the province has made this step is important,” Milloy said.
“That’s terrific, we are very pleased,” said Rob Horne, the region’s commissioner of planning.
Horne said he has never heard of the province intervening in this way.
Paul Britton, a private-sector urban planner who represents some developers at the board hearing, has called on the region to negotiate a solution. Britton, a partner at MHBC Planning, was reluctant to talk about the province’s move to get involved.
“I can’t really comment at this point,” Britton said. “It is a matter of pending litigation, so we will just have to see.”
