Hello GREN'ers,
Please find below details on an Internet Democracy Café that TransitionKW is organizing.
I should explain that TransitionKW is hosting this event since a lack of Internet
democracy would affect our ability to freely and peacefully organize and
disseminate information online. This is critical for us in our efforts
to address peak oil and climate change. A democratic Internet is of
course essential too for many other groups like GREN.
I hope to see at least some of you there. And if you can think of others who may be interested, feel free to let them know. Thanks so much!

Internet Democracy Café
TransitionKW would like to invite you to an event that deals with the growing concern about the loss of a democratic Internet, where computer networks are free of undesirable government surveillance and unfair corporate control. We are raising awareness about what is happening and looking for ways to deal with it before it’s too late. Please join us in person for an Internet Democracy Café to connect with like-minded others and grow public awareness about these issues.
When: Wednesday, September 26 from 7-9:30pm
Where: Queen Street Commons (43 Queen St. S., Kitchener)
What: Short panel followed by conversation café involving audience. Topic areas include:
Internet-related legislation -
What is happening with our laws and policies related to Internet use
(i.e. Bill C-11, Lawful Access Act)? How does this affect our ability to
freely and peacefully organize and share information over the Internet?Internet connectivity - Who has access to the Internet? Who does not and why is this so? What are the concerning implications of this situation?Information sharing bans - How is it being decided what information we can share versus what must be kept secret on the Internet?Technological solutions
- At a very high, easy-to-grasp level, what technical solutions exist
that could make the Internet be managed more democratically and fairly?
