Hi folks

I'll be on Talk Local with Rogers TV tomorrow speaking about Tar Sands pipeline projects and the need for a National Energy Strategy & Provincial review for Line 9.  The show will be on several times during the day but here's the website with the TV guide. Paisley Corrazin and I will be featured on the show, Talk Local for an 8 minute segment. Here's the TV guide if you'd like to catch it. : http://www.rogerstv.com/page.aspx?lid=1&rid=22

Last night at the protest, a fella from the National Energy Board showed up to film the event. He even brought his own camera person. This fella was the same one who interviewed me at the NEB open house regarding Phase 1 of the Enbridge pipeline.  He interviewed me on camera for another 15 minutes after the event to get views on the concerns and issues.

In Today's KW Record, Federal MNR Minister Joe Oliver published a letter in the Record saying Bitumen is not corrosive compared to crude oil.  I sent a letter of retort by proxy which will be published soon. (I maxed out my Record submissions already).  It was reassuring to see that the Federal Government seems to be taking some notice of our local activities.

In response, I've sent the following letter below which was shared with both Provincial and Federal officials. It will help get you up to speed on the risks. The photos in the attachment are the local routes where this pipeline currently exists.

Thanks folks

Subject: Line 9 reversal and Human Health Risks

Dear Ministers

Please review this YouTube video of citizens in the US being poisoned by the fumes and water contamination associated with the Enbridge pipeline spill in Kalamazoo Michigan. This is a bona fide video of actual victims impacted by the toxicity of tar sands bitumen. It's the same stuff we'll be shipping through Ontario if Enbridge LIne 9 reversal gets approved. See the video here:

The lack of regard to proper clean up mimics the same issues we are seeing in Sarnia by Aamjiwnaang. I know Ron Plain and Ada Lockridge personally. They have shared their plight with me. They can take you on a toxic tour of their reserve. Take you to the areas where your throat will feel the tingling at the back and the other area where your eyes feel irritated. You can literally feel different physical reactions based on the areas of different chemical poisons you're being exposed to. Read of it here. Ms. May can speak of this personally.

To view the existing pipeline routes of Line 9 please view the attachment and you will find these pipes cross children's parks, backyards of residential communities in Ayr in Waterloo Region.  It crosses the Grand River, the source of 25% of my personal water supply here in Waterloo. The Grand is the main water supply for downstream communities including Brant, Brantford, Six Nations and Paris Ontario.

Tar Sands Pipeline and Safety Risks is a joint report released by the Natural Resource Defence Council, the Sierra Club, the Natural Wildlife Federation and Pipeline Safety Trust. The data indicates that Diluted Bitumen is far more corrosive than conventional crude based on the fact that the bitumen blends are more acidic, thick, and it contains 15 to 20 times higher acid concentrations than regular crude, 5 to 10 times as much sulfer. The sulfer can lead to weakening or "embrittlement of pipelines.  To view the report visit:  http://www.nrdc.org/energy/files/tarsandssafetyrisks.pdf

Diluted bitumen has high concentrations of chloride salt which leads to chloride stress and corrosion issues, especially in the high temperature pipelines needed to move this particular product and refiners themselves admit bitumen has higher quantities of quartz sand particles than conventional crude oil.

Even Syncrude produced reports that states, " In oil sand industry, formation of a stable salty water-in-diluted bitumen emulsion poses a serious corrosion problem at the bitumen upgrading plant."   This is the report as produced by Syncrude: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ef020098y

It is evident that the combination of chemical corrosion and physical abrasion can dramatically increase the rate of pipeline deterioration during the processing and transportation phase yet just today, MP Joe Oliver wrote the following in the KW Record in the Opinion Section on November 20:

Not more corrosive
Re: Get us Canadian oil, but safely — Nov. 17
In your Nov. 17 editorial expressing support for the reversal of the Line 9 pipeline that will transport light crude from Western Canada to Ontario, you referred to oilsands diluted bitumen as a “more corrosive substance.”
It’s important to note that often-cited allegations that diluted bitumen from Canada’s oilsands in Alberta is more corrosive in pipelines are false. Both scientific research and industrial experience have determined that bitumen-derived crude oil is no more corrosive in transmission pipelines than other crudes.
I refer you to a fact sheet on this subject that is available on the Natural Resources Canada website athttp://www.nrcan.gc.ca/media-room/news-release/2012/6676Joe Oliver

Mr. Oliver, STOP LYING TO THE CANADIAN PUBLIC!

In the attachment is a photo of a local protest that took place in Waterloo Ontario on November 19 asking for a stop on the Keystone XL and Line 9. Residents organized because we want to secure a National Energy Strategy and an Ontario Provincial Review regarding the safety of Line 9 and it's impacts on water,  health, environment and economic systems in Ontario. I have released two petitions to secure these objectives and you can review those online here:

We cannot afford to approve these pipelines in the absence of these processes. Please see to it that these requests are fulfilled in order to reasonably mitigate the associated risks these projects pose to the good people of or nation.

Thank you kindly for your time.
