I want to let you know about two very important announcements made today that will strengthen Ontario’s Greenbelt.

First, Oakville’s Glenorchy Conservation Area will be the first expansion of the Greenbelt.

Today the Ontario government announced that Oakville’s Glenorchy Conservation Area will be added to Ontario’s Greenbelt. The 400-hectare area, roughly the size of 800 football fields, in northern Oakville is the first addition to Ontario’s Greenbelt since it was created in 2005.

Glenorchy – Scottish for “valley of tumbling waters” – includes rolling hills, forest, creeks, wetlands, Sixteen Mile Creek valley and gorge. The area, which is considered environmentally sensitive land, will now be a protected part of the Greenbelt, largely thanks to local citizens working with the municipality to safeguard this land for generations to come.

The government also committed to doubling the amount of trees to be planted on the site. This will help improve the region’s air quality, increase forest cover and create better habitat for birds and wildlife.

Please send a letter to the province applauding this move. Let elected officials know you support growing the Greenbelt!

Second, it just got easier for communities to grow the Greenbelt.

The provincial government also created a new category to protect urban river valleys as part of the Greenbelt. This will encourage more municipalities to expand the Greenbelt. Several municipalities in and around the GTA, including Toronto, Mississauga, and Guelph, have indicated they would like to help grow the Greenbelt.

The province will be consulting the public on this over the next month, and your voice will be important. We’ll be in touch with details about how you can be involved and make your voice heard.

These are two important milestones for the Greenbelt. Together, they will help connect millions of Ontarians to the farmlands that feed cities and suburbs, and the green spaces and aquifers that clean our air and water. Sit back, enjoy some fine Ontario wine or cider, and celebrate a great day for the Greenbelt.

Thanks,
Gillian McEachern
