New report by Greenpeace based on documents secured by Freedom of Information Act reveals how Royal Dutch Shell has colluded with the Canadian government to undermine environmental legislation. Canada is developing a full-blown case of the ‘resource curse’, far worse than simple Dutch disease: Puts oil before democracy. Shell has been a key player in the Harper government’s Oil Sands Advocacy Strategy, to weaken environmental laws. Shell has largely abandoned its investments in renewable energy: They are pushing for two huge new tar sands mines. The report clearly shows how the Northern Gateway Pipeline & Shell’s new tar sands mines are bad for economy. The report was released as premiers gather to discuss a new National Energy Strategy. Also interesting to note: Canada's premiers haven't had a group sit-down meeting with Stephen Harper since 2009.
