PEAK OIL: Oil Prices moving to Red Alert
Despite the European crisis, near-recession in the US, recession in Japan and falling growth in China and India IEA's estimate shows how oil prices levered up through 2011. The IEA presents what it calls unfavourable scenarios able to bring $200 a barrel oil by as early as 2015-2017 - without any special geopolitical tensions or pressure.

re: Climate Change and Harp Seal Populations
Harp Seals dying due to Climate Change: Thinning ice, declining 6% each year is dramatically killing off Canada's Harp Seal pups. Expert David Johnson from Duke University states entire year classes may be dying off: years when every pup dies. Lack of Sea Ice means unusually short 12-day nursing periods from Harp Seal mothers in order to adapt to the spring melt.

re: Canada's lack of Environmental Enforcement:
Environment Canada took over 20 yrs to collect $2.4M in fines regarding CEPA violations. Meanwhile Toronto Public Library got $2.6M in fines for overdue books in 2009...That's pitiful.

Was Baupost’s Mega-Quarry Investment A Mega-Mistake?
The most likely scenario is that community opposition combined with the record magnitude of the project will prompt the environmental audit Highland is trying to avoid. Even if the findings are benign, the exercise alone would delay approval, dashing hopes for a near-term project start. In the (more likely) event that environmental impacts are found, it will spell more bad news for Highland. If the stakes are too high, the project may be rejected, leaving Baupost and other large investors to suffer a loss. Even if the project moves forward, any environmental citations will be costly, reducing net profits and limiting Baupost’s overall return.
