I must admit, as a recovering applied scientist, I've had trouble with the mythos side of the cultural equation , but I find the arguments put forth by Kingsnorth et al very compelling. 
Paul Kingsnorth: "If we haven't got new stories to replace the ones that are visibly failing then we haven't anywhere to go because at the end of the day - at the end of the story - the numbers are never enough."
