I'd take this with a tonne of salt. The Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, an association of people who want to boost public broadcasting, are alarmed that the Federal Conservatives are planning to slash CBC revenues; some of the mps are even proposing to dismantle the CBC entirely. What we can do, however, is write down Braid's words and throw them back at him when the cuts eventuate. You might also check out the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting and read some of the distressing statements coming out of the government. Braid is not a very capable mp, and pretty naive, and may be out of the loop of the real decision-makers in the government. This new local service is welcome, but the main body of the CBC has never been so threatened.

Subject: CBC announces local services for Kitchener-Waterloo
Good afternoon,
Following up on your previous correspondence regarding the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), I am pleased to inform you of yesterday's announcement that the CBC has agreed to extend service to Waterloo Region and provide new local radio and internet services to the community in the fall of 2012.
Our government remains committed to supporting the CBC in its mandate as our national broadcaster. The CBC plays an important role in providing uniquely Canadian programming that contributes to our shared national consciousness and identity. New local services will ensure that Kitchener-Waterloo residents are better served by our public broadcaster, and at the same time will allow our region to be more involved in the national conversation.
As the MP for Kitchener-Waterloo, I am proud to represent this community and advocate for our residents. I look forward to the participation of the CBC as this region continues to grow and prosper.
Sincerely,
Peter Braid, M.P.
Kitchener-Waterloo
