Industry Canada
Dear Ms. Lanteigne:
Thank you for your email of August 8, 2011, in which you convey your views regarding the importance of science and research in developing public policy.
Rest assured that the Government of Canada is committed to supporting federal science for the public good. As demonstrated in the federal Science and Technology Strategy,Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage, the government recognizes research investment as key to promoting the innovation, talent and ideas that enable Canada to face important challenges, increase productivity and ultimately raise our standard of living. Last fiscal year, the government spent an estimated $5.6 billion on in-house government S&T activities, an increase of more than $300 million from three years prior. These funds represent only one facet of federal spending on S&T. Significant federal support is also provided for outstanding research undertaken by Canada’s businesses, universities and colleges.
The government also understands the importance of disseminating publicly funded scientific knowledge, which occurs through a variety of means. The National Research Council Canada, for example, is part of a growing group of universities, colleges, agencies and other research organizations that use publicly searchable online archives to share the more than 1,000 scientific articles it publishes annually. Most science-based departments and agencies also produce publicly accessible publications that highlight research activities and findings. In addition, public portals, such as Science.gc.ca, have been developed to directly communicate information on federal science to Canadians.
Supporting S&T, including federal science, is important to this government. The results will ensure a high quality of life for all Canadians, as well as our success in the global economy.
Once again, thank you for bringing your views to my attention, and please accept my best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
The Honourable Gary Goodyear, P.C., M.P.
