Largest Mega Open-Pit Aggregates Mine in North America threatens Ontario
Ecologos is part of a coalition opposing the threatened massive open pit mine
being proposed for the middle of the Melancthon potato country. The formal
application for this attack onOntario by a Boston hedge fund has now been made
giving opponents only 40 days to examine a stack three feet high of reports and
provide a coherent opposition. You are invited to a meeting on March 31, 2011
from 6 to 8 PM to see what is being considered and how you can help protect the
Province. The meeting will be at 181 Bay Street, Suite 4700 , Toronto . Come in
the Wellington Street door on the south side a little west of Yonge Street and
take the elevator to the 47th floor. Bringyour best thinking.
Some of the elements of the proposal:
1. Up to 150 large ore trucks per hour entering and leaving the site 24
hours per day.
2. Tearing up over 1700 acres of potato country as a start. The company
purchased over 8000 acres.
3. Managing” forever 600,000 000 litres of water per day with no proposed
treatment facility to take out the blasting chemicals and no trust fund to pay
for dealing with the water when the limestone revenues have disappeared.
4. Digging 200 feet below the water table.
