Dear Hon. Prime Minster and ministers

Please review the following article showing how the proposed Highland Quarry could have adverse impacts to Waterloo Region.

                http://waterloo.openfile.ca/waterloo/file/2011/06/melancthon-quarry-could-impact-waterloo-region

The Grand River Conservation Authority published previously that the Grand River supports the same gross national revenue as the province of Nova Scotia.

Waterloo Region is home to the second largest food belt in Ontario and it is a leading community for technology development in Canada.

Lake Erie's water volumes have dropped over the years to the point ships must split loads up or vessels risk running aground. Increased costs to shipping through the great lakes can have adverse impacts on manufacturing sectors and trade. We need to protect the flow an flow rates heading to Lake Erie.

The Highland quarry, urban sprawl and quarry pits over top primary recharge areas must be addressed at the federal level. Provincial ministries lack the funds and staff to establish this. We need federal source water protection legislation in order to adequately assess cross jurisdictional and federal economic risks associated with projects like this and we need to place a monetary value on the function of aggregate systems for the water resources they provide before we destroy these systems.

The federal government promised a National Water Strategy in the throne speech in 2007.

How much funding has been allocated to establish this?

What have we accomplished towards this objective to date?

What is the scheduling for the strategy?

I would like a written response to address these concerns.

Thank you kindly for your time.
