Water-Friendly Patios, Garden Paths and Driveways
Tuesday, June 14, 2011, 7-9pm
An introduction to permeable paving
Rain carries dirt, oil, and grease off driveway surfaces straight into storm
drains and into our rivers. With a wide variety of attractive permeable
paving options, you can reduce runoff from your property and filter water
naturally before it enters the ground.
Workshop includes:
- Introduction to permeable paving options: Interlocking bricks
(our main focus), permeable concrete, green driveways, crushed stone and
gravel
- Demo installation of permeable interlocking bricks, including the
layers of aggregate beneath the bricks, led by Rickard Steinkraus of
Heritage Stoneworks
- Pink lemonade in the garden at REEP House
Presented by:
- Hal Stratford, Stormwater Specialist, Hanson Pipe & Precast
- Richard Steinkraus, General Manager, Heritage Stoneworks
Build a Backyard Pet Waste Composter
Tuesday, June 21, 2011, 7-9pm
Puppy powered gardens
Half of all households in Waterloo Region care for a pet, which means a lot
of pet waste. If dealt with poorly, pet waste can contaminate waterways and
burden our landfills. Find out how to turn your pet droppings into a
valuable garden resource and take care of the planet at the same time!
Workshop includes:
- Introduction to dealing with pet waste
- Hands-on construction of simple composters (one per participant)
that can be installed underground in your backyard to turn this year's pet
waste into next year's garden fertilizer
- Meet and greet with Nomi the REEP Water Dog
Presented by: Cheryl Evans, Water Education Coordinator, REEP Green
Solutions
Note: Materials for composter will be provided free of charge. Registration
limited to 20 people. Tools will be used during the workshop and so we
recommend participants are a minimum age of 12 years.
