Hi folks

In regards to dying birds in the US:

A pesticide called DRC-1339 is specifically used to kill starlings, blackbirds etc. These birds are considered pests in places such as Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana and Arkansas. It's not to hard for any farmer to buy this stuff which is pretty scary. It's made by Syntenta which ironically, sponsors the agency monitoring the health of Canada's Wildlife, The Canadian
Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre. This is an
obvious bias that may or may not cover up issues of this nature.

In New Jersey, dead birds fell from the sky in January previously. It turned out to be a man made cull of "Pest" birds by the US Department of Agriculture and they admitted it. Problem was they didn't give any advance notice to the folks in New Jersey because they were not expecting the birds to travel that far. Here's a You Tube News coverage of this matter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGL66SKZV4w

Here's another news story re: the NJ incident :http://rightofmiddle.wordpress.com/2009/01/27/birds-poisoned-by-usda-litter-new-jersey-town/

As it turns out, the recent incidents in Louisiana, Arkansas etc. coorelates with incidents of fish kills and the deaths of red winged black birds aka migratory birds and clearly this act was a violation of both fisheries and the Migratory Bird Act. If the USDA was responsible for that, they're not likely to admit it. They also might not want to flag the the truth about which chemical is responsible as to prevent copy cat incidents. I expect that is the reason for the current media black out.

In my view, products like this can easily be exploited by those wanting to profit from destruction to reduce ecological constraints for development projects and/or natural resource opportunities. We must examine what policies are in place in Ontario and Canada to prevent the misuse of these chemicals and what measures are in place to prevent someone from using these same chemicals as a form of eco-terrorism.

Either way, I figured it would help GREN members to know of this.
