Subject: [All] The meeting at RIM re: strategic plan

        Hi folks

The Chronicle wrote an article about the previous planning sessions saying the Environment was taking a high priority but that it was mainly due to "students" participating in the planning process. Well this evening the only student there was my daughter Samantha and the rest of the folks were 40 on up and still the environment came out as the main issue closely followed by the LRT.

The group discussion was focused mainly on the five criteria as outlined by the city's guidelines followed with a series of topics on which to give comment using the electronic devices. 1 means it's a top priority, 9 is least. People were visibly frustrated by a couple of the questions due to the double meanings of some of the wording. For example, one question asked if the city should be more pro active in regards to the clearing of sidewalks. Some didn't know if that would mean giving more tickets to our retired 80 year old home owners for not clearing snow soon enough or if that meant they supported the city taking the responsibility to clear city sidewalks faster. There were a few topics of that nature that left you wondering if this is a concept to support in principal or will this issue would actually increase our tax base. Some of the topics were CLEARLY under regional jurisdiction but we were told that the answers we give would help shape the city's views on those topics which left me wondering why we were not actually prioritizing shaping policy of the city's actual jurisdiction. It is the CITY'S planning strategy after all. Although they added constraints to limit public input, they should have used those same constraints to keep their process on topic and relevant to city based policy formation.

Either way, the cookies were good so I'm happy. I've included a poster in the attachments that might be good for a smile.

        Have a good one folks.

        Lulu :0)
