Ottawa tar sands protest announced for September 26th

The tar sands have been called Canada's carbon bomb and a climate crime, and now Canadians are going to have a chance to send an unequivocal message that we aren't going to stand for it any more. On September 26, people will gather in Ottawa for an act of non-violent civil disobedience that will catalyze and unify opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline and all tar sands oil.

As the white house sit ins continue to have a huge impact in DC, it is time for Canadians to gear up for our turn to risk arrest in the name of the future of our shared planet and climate. Starting last Saturday in Washington, dozens of people lined up on the street each day with the intention of being arrested. Over 2,000 people have signed up for the protest spanning two weeks, and are rotating in shifts of 75-100 people going to the sit-in each day, with several dozen being arrested. 275 people, including Bill McKibben have been taken away in handcuffs. People of all stripes have signed up to put themselves on the line, including a succesful climate scientist and  a labour leader. To follow the action, go to www.tarsandsaction.org.

Federal government releases new coal regulations

On Friday August 19, the federal government released its long-awaited new regulations for coal-fired power plants that will go into effect starting in 2015. However, environmental groups have slammed the regulations, explaining that existing coal plants will essentially be given a free pass to pollute for decades to come, and that the new Maxim coal plant won't be required to play by the rules. As one of our facebook posters said, the regs have 'holes so big you can drive a coal truck through them'. Knowing what we know about the climate crisis Canada should not be building any new coal, and should be working as fast as possible to phase out existing coal. At the very least, all companies should have to abide by the government's rules.

After Environment Minister Peter Kent announced the new regulations, his phone line was flooded with calls from people outraged that he refused to clarify whether the new Maxim coal plant will be allowed to avoid the rules entirely.

So long, Jack.

The movement is deeply going to miss Jack Layton. He was a true ally in the house of commons, and his spirit and determination will be a hard act to follow. Jack championed (among other things) Bill C-311, the climate change accountability act, and was a consistent voice of reason on Canada's need to address the climate crisis. He didn't just talk the talk, though, he walked the walk; Layton believed in personal responsibility for tackling climate change, retrofitting his house to be highly energy efficient.

In his last letter to Canadians, Jack urged us all to take the threat of climate change seriously. He also reminded us that if we work together and remain hopeful, optimistic, and loving, we can change the world. So let's honour his memory by coming together for a future safe from climate change.

Take a look at what David Suzuki Foundation, Environmental Defence, and Sierra Club have said in remembrance of a great man.

				Grassroots toolkit for Ontario

Ontario has a world-class program for implementing renewable energy, but its future is uncertain in light of the upcoming provincial election. Climate Action Network has put together a toolkit to bolster grassroots action surrounding this issue, including informational documents and ideas for getting involved. Take a sneak peak here.
