Hi folks
I made a big banner, zoomed up to Shelburne and joined the march today. The
banner read, Save Aggregates for Water and under that it had GREN: Grand River
Environmental Network. I told folks I was a member. Photo in the attachments.
When I arrived folks were thrilled to have someone from Waterloo to join in.
About 200 folks were there as the march arrived. Big pot luck took place in a
huge storage barn.
Met members of the Council of Canadians. Maude Barlow was at a UN meeting at the
time but texted a greeting read by Mark Calzavara. Met with Aboriginal activist
Danny Barton, members of Iroquois and Anishnabeg groups. Lots of folks came in
from Simcoe around Tiny Township, Owen Sound, Toronto etc. I gathered many
emails of folks attending so we can send correspondences.
They had guest speakers speaking about the 200km walk, many spoke on protecting
the unique soil type of these A1 farmlands and they asked me to speak to the
group to give the view of the folks downstream so I gave them the news from
Waterloo. I spoke of how our region is spending millions in water conservation
efforts and in trying to maintain the water quality in the Grand River, yet
projects like this could have adverse impacts on our watershed. I spoke of how
this project lacked spring thaw data and how they are using bore hole data taken
from 1945 to assess risk and how bore hole data is unreliable when used in
sloped outwash moraine systems. I spoke of how the scope of the study is too
limited and lacks regard to long term ecological and economical impacts, how
more communities and more ministries need to be part of this review process etc.
Afterwards the organizers told me Dale Goldhawk is coming to do interviews and
they asked me to stick around so I can speak with him on these issues. He came,
we spoke and he has it all recorded. After that I went home.
