“You shouldn’t defend human rights, or you’ll be killed.”
Carmen Mejía received this warning several times in June.
Then, a month later, someone shot her fellow grassroots activist, Deodora Hernandez, in the eye at close range. At the time, Deodora was speaking out about the impact of a mine on her community's water supply. She was seriously wounded, but she survived.
The attempt on Deodora’s life underscores how seriously we must take the threats made against Carmen Mejía.
Carmen is from a Mayan community in Guatemala. Her life is at risk because she is campaigning against impacts of mining on her community's human rights. She has spoken at public meetings about her concerns about the Marlin Mine, which is owned by a subsidiary of Canadian mining company Goldcorp.
The pattern of targeting and attempting to silence activists like Carmen Mejía must be investigated.
Will you help protect Carmen? Join Amnesty International in calling on Guatemalan authorities to take measures to stop the killing and death threats.
Together we can provide Carmen Mejía with protection, and allow her to be a strong voice against injustices committed against her community.

A PATTERN OF VIOLENCE
Activists
[Yuri]
Yuri Melini, a Guatemalan environmental activist, survives a shooting. But Amnesty International believes that he, his family, and colleagues are in grave danger.
There is a growing list of people who, like Carmen Mejía, are being threatened, jailed or attacked for speaking out against mining operations in Latin America.
