Hi folks

I'm leavin today until Marcvh 16-17th to visit family but I'm looking for folks willing to do pre dawn walks along Wideman Road during or after Spring's first rainfall. It's best to check the roadways before dawn because the dead critters become crow food once the sun is fully up.

The area of the most potential is shown in the attachment. I spotted a high number of salamander roadkills along this area of Wideman Road last September but the search can be extended to the area where Laurel Creek Village starts.

Folks interested in monitoring will need a flashlight, a ziploc bag, pen and paper to record time and location of find. If you want, print out the map in the attachments and basically mark where the spots where critters are found. Just toss them in the baggy and place them in a freezer. This will preserve the DNA.

If anyone does finds a salamander, just email to the following folks below and let them know of the find ASAP.

Dr. Jim Bogart, University of Guelph

If there is a Jefferson find we'll need to get this critter over to the University of Guelph for Mr. Bogart to confirm the find. The map to his office on campus is in the attachments. I'm hoping to be home before the rain but if I'm not, I'm hoping folks will pick up the torch on this one until I'm home.

By the way, Environment Canada is investigating how the city and region have been addressing the issue of rare birds in ESAP 19. I'm working with a wildlife officer on that matter right now. It's all good.

Have a good one everybody.
