Hi Neil
Thanks for the notice about the meeting. I have been on the Lower Doon
Community Association for the past five or six years and we have worked very
hard to prevent the bridge going in at this location but it has been a
useless effort. My feeling is that once again this meeting is just another
formality they must go through and they have given little consideration to
the preservation of this natural and as yet unspoiled habitat. From the
mailing I just received today it appears that the trail will be going just
behind the tree line along the river and this is exactlly where we have been
seeing the eagles for years. I took this photo on Dec. 23. This was directly
across from our home. We will be attending the meeting but are disheartened
and disappointed in our city regarding their "non" protection of our green
space. We somehow need to get the attention and support of a group with much
more influence than we as local citizens seem to have.
See you at the meeting.
Regards
Carole Moore

In my view, such a trail and bridge will eliminate the wintering American
Bald Eagle from the City of Kitchener. On December 18th, while conducting
the annual Christmas Bird Count, I saw 4 eagles between the Club House and
the 401 bridge over the Grand River. Three of these birds were within 2
minutes of each other and flew outside of the area when they discovered our
presence. A bridge and trail will bring unprecedented human activity in the
area where the birds will fish, perch, preen, socialize and begin courtship
activities. I fear they will be lost from this area which has been
relatively quiet during the winterseason. In addition, visiting winter
waterfowl (i.e. ducks such as Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Common Merganser)
will also be disturbed and take to unnecessary flight because they are
unused to humans and their pets.
I should advise you that I have been a participant on the monitoring team
for these winter birds for several years. In the past 2-3 years they have
an even greater presence in this area.
Please consider attending this "information" meeting and voicing your
concerns. Bring friends. Please forward to other like-minded friends who
believe we should keep natural areas for nature.
Yours for Nature,
Neil
