Enviro News Updates and Local Events

Regarding: Victoria Park Lake, Clair Lake Assessment, Northdale and Proroguing Gov't.

Regarding Victoria Park Lake:
Kitchener City Council Meeting
Monday, January 11, Kitchener City Hall, 7pm

If Sewer Rates are approved by Council in Kitchener, we could see funding allocated to help start the remediation of Victoria Park Lake. This would result in an increase of approximately $3 per household that would result in the start of the program as as early as next year with the projected completion of the project by 2015. With the current plans this proposal would not have received any funding at all until 2019.

To show support for the sewer rates to fund the remediation of the pond, please attend the Kitchener City Council meeting on January 11th and WEAR GREEN to show support.

An Notice of Public Information Centre regarding the Clair Lake and North Clair Creek Class EA is being initiated to re-evaluate the EA alternatives since the off-line lake was determined to not be technically feasible. The new addendum will be showcased by way of a drop in for the public on Tuesday January 19th at the Swimplex in the Hauser Haus room located at 101 Father David Bauer Drive from 4:30- 7:30pm.

Regarding Northdale in Waterloo
Waterloo City Council, Jan 11th

Help Urbanize the Getto in Waterloo aka HUG has been leading the voice to renew the area of Northdale for a more sustainable, community friendly reurbanized vision. Currently area residents around this university area do not feel safe. There's a shortage of apartments and an abundance of below standard housing and it is clear something needs to be done. To read about the communities current issues visit here: http://www.waterloochronicle.ca/news/ghetto/article/124428

Hug has established a website at www.hugwaterloo.com and they believe, if we can intesify apartment dwellings in the urban core, we can help offset the need for greenfield development and foster a vision in compliance to the Places to Grow Act. In today's Waterloo Chronicle, HUG is calling for the city to expropriate the lands to redesign and re-develop the entire area to foster better community safety, more housing options and a healthier community.  http://www.waterloochronicle.ca/news/article/198978

On January 11th, Councillor Jan d'Ailly will make a motion to explore the options and secure a staff report to be delivered to council later this spring.
