      ACTION ALERT: Light a candle of hope for the Kyoto Protocol TODAY!

        Environment minister John Baird will arrive in Cancun today (Tuesday) for the COP 16 climate talks. He will be undoubtedly be carrying the message, as has already been conveyed by Canada's chief climate negotiator Guy Saint-Jacques, that Canada will not commit to the second phase of the Kyoto Protocol set to begin in January 2013.
While the Harper government denies that it is killing Kyoto, it is now refusing to negotiate legally-binding emission reduction targets for the protocol's second phase. Along with Japan and Russia, Canada is now standing against the 61 other countries (including all European Union countries) with commitments under the agreement, not to mention the 130 additional countries that have signed and ratified the agreement. Canada is standing very much alone in its opposition to the protocol.

            WHY IS THIS SIGNIFICANT?

              It means Canada is violating the only global climate change treaty with  mandatory emission reduction commitments (the Copenhagen Accord is  non-binding and allows for a global temperature increase of 4-5 degree  Celsius);

     Canada is disrupting a multilateral process for the other countries now  committed to an extension of the Kyoto Protocol and the Harper  government's actions could lead to a further weakening of the agreement if  other countries follow our lead;

    The move contributes to creating deep divisions among the 192 countries at  the talks and undermines international progress when immediate action is  necessary given the quickening pace of climate change;

    It  provides political cover for the Harper government to continue to allow an  increase in carbon emissions and an expansion of the tar sands while a new  climate agreement including all major emitters is still under negotiation;

    It means Canada is not demonstrating vision and leadership in the face of a global crisis.

            WHAT CAN YOU DO?
                      Light a candle of hope for the Kyoto Protocol.

              Have a friend or family member take a digital photo of you with a candle of hope.   You can upload that photo to the HopeForKyoto group on Flickr: www.flickr.com/groups/hopeforkyoto/ or email it to mramsden at canadians.org. We will post those photos on our website and send a message with all of these photos to environment minister John Baird.

              Change your Facebook, Twitter, or other social media profile picture to a candle of hope for Kyoto.  We’ve created an image you can use: www.canadians.org/images/KyotoCandle.jpg

              Spread the word on Facebook.  Post a message on your wall, and join the Light a candle of hope for Kyoto! event: http://on.fb.me/g70RUt

              Tweet the news on Twitter.  Use the hashtag #hopeforkyoto, and include this shortened link to the Kyoto candle picture: "http://bit.ly/dSbTHp"

          We likely can't change the Harper government's negotiating position over the next two days, but we can send a powerful visual that Canadians care and want their country to be committed to the Kyoto Protocol. It will demonstrate that we are finding the light in this darkness to redouble our efforts to stop the Harper government's climate agenda.
          Send this to your listserves! Spread the word! Please take this 5-minute action for climate justice today.
