Although the volcanic eruptions in Iceland may not have a significant impact
on the air, water and food pollution in our area as long as the ash does not
blow in our direction, the following may be of interest to some.*

"The greatest environmental concern from volcanic ash, and the most
significant risk to grazing livestock, would be fluoride content in ash
deposits"

"The risk is of fluoride poisoning if they breathe or eat too much,"
Hilmarsdottir said through a white protective mask.” “The fluoride in the
ash creates acid in the animals' stomachs, corroding the intestines and
causing hemorrhages. It also binds with calcium in the blood stream, and
after heavy exposure over a period of days makes bones frail, even causing
teeth to crumble.”

Fluoride in Icelandic Volcanic Ash threatens humans, animals, plants

“The last time this volcano erupted in 1821-1823, sheep and cows on its
slopes were killed by toxic fluoride gas which also affects horses and
humans. Easily absorbed through the skin or eyes, a quantity as small as 28
mg per kilo of body mass is fatal.”

In a previous eruption of Mt. Hekla in Iceland, the fluoride killed
livestock and gave people crippling skeletal fluorosis
