Subject: Your help please
Please accept my apologies for the mass email but time is of the essence and I need your help.
You have been kind enough to show your support for Local Television in the past and because of your efforts the finish line is now in sight.
The debate on Local TV has finally progressed to the point of decision. The Federal Government has asked the CRTC to hold a hearing and report to the Governor in Council. As part of this process the CRTC is once again seeking public input and we need your help now more than ever.
Local TV stations like this one are closing. As you may know the stations in Red Deer, Alberta and Brandon, Manitoba were forced to go dark. These communities are reeling from the loss. CKX Brandon is a particularly sad case as the cable giant SHAW bragged in full page ads across Canada that they would save them because, "nothing was wrong with Local TV"; but after completing their due diligence SHAW quietly walked away. Perhaps the best example of the imbalance in the current system is to consider that CHCH-TV in Hamilton was slated to close, but was sold for $12.00, while Mountain View cable, serving a small portion of Hamilton was purchased by SHAW for an amount in excess of a quarter BILLION dollars. There is something terribly wrong when the company distributing the product makes billions while the company that owns the product is going broke.
I urge you to write the CRTC (a sample letter and instructions on how to file are included below), or visit www.localtvmatters.ca and follow the links to file your comments.
*You must file your comments by 02November, 2009*
If you require any help creating your letter please do not hesitate to call on me. My phone number is (519) 741-4400 or my email is dennis.watson at ctv.ca .
Without your help this station could cease to exist; so please write the CRTC today.
Thank You
Dennis

Dear Secretary General,
RE: Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2009-614
Please accept the following comments in response to the above-referenced Notice of Consultation.
[Name of organization/we/I] strongly support local television and the introduction of a sustainable broadcasting model in Canada for consumers.
Local television plays an important and valuable role in our community. We support and encourage the implementation of a system that would allow negotiations for value between local TV stations and cable and satellite companies relating to the distribution of local signals and programming.
Consumers already pay for local TV as part of their basic service. In the process of implementing a negotiation for value regime, TV distributors should not be allowed to double bill consumers for the same service. To protect consumers, regulating the rate for basic service must be considered.
We urge the CRTC to finally fix the broken model underlying the television system in Canada, including implementing a solution that enables a sustainable future for local television, including the right to negotiate.
Sincerely,
Name, Title, Company, Address, Postal code, Email, Phone
