There are three ways to address Harper's position towards Copenhagen.
1. A vote out of office (unrealistic prior to Copenhagen)
2. A non confidence Vote from the Tories - Also unrealistic timing
3. Change Party Policy. THIS is possible.
Mr. Braid's conduct and eye movements were absolutely critical to observe. The man was struggling. That's when I knew, that there is a weakness creating a divide in this topic, regarding this leader and the party. That was a Eureka moment.
That is the weakest link. We must appeal to Tory groups to tell Harper they want Copenhagen ratified. We need them to seek this as a Party policy. Tories have supported the environment in the past because through Mulroney, we had some of the best laws to help curb acid rain and Harper's current support for tar sands is circumventing those efforts. Those Tories are still around with us. Let's make the effort to get the word out to them that it's up to them to tell their leader to ratify Copenhagan or to push for policy reform to make it happen.
If the current dynamic is not broken, Copenhagan will not be ratified and we'll end up with a North American Agreement and nobody knows exactly what that will entail. It may raise or lower standards. It's very loosy goosey and not a suitable replacement for meaningful climate change action.
I've sent the minutes of the meeting to the media. In it's current state it's hearsay until they interview me, but they won't likely cover it as a story without going to Peter Braid. I basically gave them the materials so they would have the ability to do so because we need to really cover the topic of this North American Agreement. If the matter is covered as a story and I get the chance to speak I I fully intend to call Tories to action. (as well as everyone else but especially Tories) that we need their help to ratify Copenhagan. It's not an issue of party politics. It's an issue of shared survival.
